What Makes Suriyanar Kovil Different?
This isn’t just another Navagraha temple. It’s the only place where Suryan (Sun) is the main deity unlike other temples. Even more interesting he appears in a calm form with his consorts Usha Devi and Chaya Devi, which is rare. The biggest difference? All nine planets are placed within the same temple complex, positioned direction-wise around Surya.
The Story Behind the Suriyanar Temple
The history isn’t just mythology, it explains why people visit this temple seriously to remove negative effects. Sage Kalava Muni, suffered by leprosy due to past karma, performed intense penance to the Navagrahas. When they granted him relief, it disrupted the cosmic order. As a result, the Navagrahas themselves had to undergo suffering on Earth before being restored through penance near this region caused by Brahma in anger.
Navagrahas performed did severe pooja and seeked forgiveness to Lord Shiva with complete dedication, hoping to be freed from the curse. Pleased by their sincerity, Shiva appeared before them and granted relief. Shiva also advised them to to bless devotees directly those who visit this place and pray for them.
In other Navagraha temples where planets are treated as secondary deities. Each of the nine planets has a separate shrine, and devotees worship them in a specific sequence.
This is the only Navagraha temple where Shiva is not the main deity — Surya takes that role, making it structurally and spiritually unique.
