History of Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple

The temple started more than 1,500 years ago. The Pandya kings built the first structure. Later, the Nayak rulers expanded it.

There is also a story about Goddess Meenakshi. She was born to the Pandya king and queen. She had three breasts. A voice said the third breast would disappear when she met her husband. When she met Lord Shiva, it did. Their marriage became the main story of Madurai. People still celebrate it every year at the Chithirai Festival.

Temple Architecture

There are 14 towers, each full of colorful statues. A sacred pond inside the temple. Devotees wash before prayers. Thousand pillar hall has many carved stone pillars. Some even make music when tapped. Main Deity of the temple is Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati), Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) and Lord Alagar (Vishnu).
